Wi-Fi Offload

The number of wireless subscribers accessing mobile data services is growing exponentially. However, the most savvy operators are seeking to maximize the data capacity of their existing networks before investing in new technologies. Qualcomm’s 3G /Wi-Fi Seamless Offload team is developing a solution to help these operators achieve this goal.

The 3G/Wi-Fi Seamless Offload solution, based on the Dual Stack Mobile IP (DSMIP) framework, enables seamless handover between 3G and Wi-Fi, allowing operators to offload select IP traffic such as HTTP, video or VoIP from the cellular network while supporting simultaneous 3G and Wi-Fi access. The solution is flexible enough to allow smart network discovery and selection depending on operator policies, characteristics of the applications, and the status of available accesses. Furthermore, select traffic may be routed over WLAN in a transparent manner without any disruption to the user experience.

Since almost all 3G devices – the devices that consume the majority of the data services – integrate WLAN access, and since WLAN is widely available at home and in hotspots, the 3G/Wi-Fi Seamless Offload solution has significant potential to be an extension of 3G that provides high service quality under an operator’s control.
