OneShotWeb
Qualcomm R&D continually aims at improving the user experience over wireless systems. Some protocols were originally designed for wire-line and links with extremely low latency. One such protocol is http. In particular, performance of Web browsing using http is sensitive to both the rate of the channel and the round-trip time (RTT) between the client and the server (see left). New generation of the air-interface increase the rate of the channel, but not so much the RTT.
OneShotWeb (OSW) is a technique to reduce the Web page download time over links with high rate and relatively high round-trip-time (RTT) such as 3G and LTE systems. OSW significantly reduces the page download time by optimizing the way http GETs are sent from the http client to the http server. By sending as many http requests as possible and as quickly as possible in parallel rather than multiple interactions (like http pipelining) and by allowing the server to serve them in any order to avoid head-of-the-line blocking (unlike http pipelining), OSW enhances the user experience by making full use of higher data rates over the wireless links.
Qualcomm R&D has built a prototype to analyze improvements in the Web browsing experience using this technique. The prototype consists of a proxy where the http client directs as many http GETs through one or two TCP sockets over a HSPA system with RTT of ~150ms. Results show that download times for popular pages such as the ones listed in the figure below are significantly reduced without any changes to the air interface.
