There comes a time for letting go

It takes flexible thinking to maintain a culture of innovation.

As another school year rapidly approaches and I once again marvel at how quickly my kids are growing up, I can’t help but realize how much events in one’s professional life reflect those in one’s personal life, but with a few interesting differences. For example, we all know that at some point, our kids will reach the age where it’s off to college, time to find a job, travel the world, etc. In other words, they are growing up and beginning their lives as adults.

How big (or small) is femto?

A femto is incredibly… infinitesimally… extraordinarily small! It’s actually one quadrillionth of a unit, which, in other terms, is one part of a number that has 15 zeros! Well, the femto that I am going discuss here is not that femto. The one I’m talking about is femtocell, which has lots of buzz around it these days.

Fishing with 3G Nets

Fishing with 3G Nets
Recently, I traveled to the rural fishing village of Santa Cruz Cabralia, in the state of Bahia, Brazil where I represented Qualcomm’s Wireless Reach initiative at the launch of the Fishing with 3G Nets project. Santa Cruz Cabralia is beautiful. However, the community has faced many hardships, including over-fishing, lack of infrastructure, and the emigration of people to urban areas in search of work.

Brew MP™ Code Camp – Seattle, August 17, 2010

Well… another successful Brew MP code camp under our belts. This time around we had our second largest turnout with nearly 30 developers in attendance. As we had this session in relative close proximity to the Bellevue AT&T campus, a few more members from the AT&T Developer Relations team were in attendance.

Segmentation Possibilities in the Smartphone Sector

In a previous blog, I claimed that 2009 was the year of the smartphone. Well if that was the case, then 2010 is the breakout year in which we are starting to see the smartphone category itself start to segment. Iconic high-end smartphones such as HTC’s Evo and Incredible and Apple’s iPhone 4 are all selling well.

Qualcomm Helps Developers Tackle Open Market Challenges on a Global Scale

Since the close of our Uplinq conference, I’ve been thinking about the complex landscape that developers encounter these days. It’s a very different environment compared to what it was like during the days of the last Brew conference, more than two years ago.

Displays Getting Touchy

I’m back to answer the questions about mirasol® displays that keep you up at night. Tuesday we addressed questions about how “front-light” technology enables users to view mirasol displays in conditions with little or no light. Now it’s time to get in “touch” with mirasol’s sensitive side.

Shedding Light on a Solar Eclipse

There are a few questions we’re asked again and again about our technology. We hear these questions from folks visiting our website, at tradeshows (like SID, which we’ll talk about in a bit) and from you, our faithful readers. Over the next couple days, I’ll be offering some answers to a couple of these astute and very frequent lines of questioning.

Are e-readers and tablets converging? Consensus is that there is no consensus.

Lately, the e-reader industry has been attacked on all sides, by both pundits and new products — set to render these single-function devices obsolete.
